Caitlin Clark Sends Encouraging Injury Update as Fever Star Eyes Wednesday Return After Back Issue

Caitlin Clark’s long-awaited return could be closer than expected.

After missing two consecutive games because of a back injury, the Indiana Fever superstar delivered a positive update on Tuesday, giving fans hope that she could be back on the court when the team faces the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday night.

Clark participated in the Fever’s practice session in Los Angeles and said she feels optimistic about being cleared to play. However, the three-time WNBA All-Star acknowledged that she will likely have a limited role as she works her way back into game action.

“Very hopeful for tomorrow,” Clark said after practice. “Obviously, I think it will be difficult for me to play both this one on Wednesday and then obviously the one on Thursday, but we’ll see.”

The Fever guard explained that if she is cleared, she expects to be placed under a minutes restriction, with the possibility of playing slightly more than 20 minutes.

“I would assume I’d be on a minutes restriction tomorrow, still hopefully a little bit over 20 (minutes) if I’m able to go,” Clark said.

For Indiana, getting Clark back healthy is the priority. While her return would provide an immediate boost on the court, the Fever understand that rushing her back too quickly could create bigger problems later in the season.

Clark’s back injury forced her to miss Indiana’s matchup on Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces, marking the second straight game she watched from the sidelines. The Fever, however, managed to secure a big 84-68 victory over the defending champions without their franchise player.

The extended break gave Clark valuable time to focus on recovery after a demanding stretch of the schedule.

Following Indiana’s June 27 game against the Los Angeles Sparks, the Fever did not return to action until July 5. Clark admitted the unusual break felt different after the team had been playing at such a fast pace.

“It feels kind of weird, honestly,” Clark said. “It’s like you play for two weeks straight. I think we had five games in eight days or whatever it was.”

The Fever star explained that players often get locked into a routine during busy stretches   preparing for opponents, studying scouting reports, and quickly moving from one game to the next.

“When you have some time off and you’re back to it, it kind of has that training camp feel,” Clark said. “Get back into the swing of things.”

Although missing games was frustrating, Clark said the time away helped her focus on getting both her body and mindset ready for the second half of the season.

“Even for myself obviously having missed the two games, it feels even longer, like I’ve had this really long break, but at the same time, get your body right and then your mind right, and get back into it,” she said.

One of the biggest questions surrounding Clark’s injury was whether it was connected to the back issue she dealt with during training camp.

Clark explained that back problems can impact different areas of the body, making proper management important.

“When you have some back stiffness and things like that, it can affect a lot of other areas of your body, so being able to control it and manage it the best you can,” Clark said.

The Fever guard added that she feels comfortable with the treatment plan and the people helping her through the recovery process.

“I think overall, like, I feel good,” Clark said. “I feel good about stuff we’re doing to help with it.”

Clark also highlighted one of the challenges athletes face that fans do not always see   the physical toll of constant travel.

Indiana is currently on an 11-day road trip, which includes long flights, hotel stays, and the challenge of maintaining a routine away from home.

“Sometimes that’s not what people always really realize,” Clark said. “It’s hard on your body to travel and be on the road for 10 days and sleeping in different hotels and things like that.”

Despite those challenges, Clark said she is doing everything possible to stay healthy and return at the right time.

“I know I’m doing everything I can to be as healthy as possible,” she said. “I really trust that, I trust the people behind me that are helping me.”

Fever head coach Stephanie White echoed that message, making it clear that Clark’s long-term health matters more than rushing her back for a single game.

“Whatever medical says that we need to do to make sure that she’s ready, and whatever she says that she needs to feel comfortable and confident is what we need to do,” White said.

White acknowledged that Clark’s return will require adjustments, including changes to rotations and the way Indiana manages minutes.

“It’s an adjustment based on who’s playing, rotations, and all that, and it’s an adjustment based on how we play,” White said.

But the Fever coach emphasized that the organization’s focus remains on protecting Clark for the long run.

“Her long-term health is the most important thing,” White said. “So if she’s ready, she’ll play, and if we have setbacks, then we’ll reevaluate.”

If Clark is cleared, she will return to action against a familiar face when Indiana takes on former Iowa teammate Kate Martin and the Los Angeles Sparks at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The matchup is scheduled for Wednesday night at 9 p.m. CT and will be televised on USA Network.

For Fever fans, the biggest takeaway from Tuesday’s practice was simple: Caitlin Clark is getting closer.

After two games away, Indiana’s star guard appears ready to take the next step toward returning  but the team will continue to prioritize making sure she is fully prepared before putting her back into a heavy workload.
