Jones, of Horseshoe J Longhorns Ranch in Greenville, said, “I’ve been raising Longhorns since 1987.” Pointing to an animal, he remarked, “This one here, she weighs 1,350, maybe 1,400 pounds.”

But to him, these are more than just large animals.

“That’s my life out there on four legs, apart from my family. Without them, I don’t think I could survive,” Jones acknowledged. Some will remain in Greenville at Horseshoe J Longhorns, while others will eventually move to a new residence.

“I breed cattle to sell to other breeders,” I said.

And among the greatest in the nation is Jones. He is well aware of what he is searching for.

The rancher said, observing the animals, “If you look through here, almost every single cow in here has rotation to their horns, where, with most breeders, that ain’t the case.”

Jones recently received a major distinction. He was inducted into the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America’s Hall of Fame and received a lifetime achievement award.”To be honest, I told them it wouldn’t work. All you do is observe. You realize it’s not going to happen? I had doubts up until the day they called my name, according to Jones. “How good does it get when you work at something your entire adult life and are recognized for it?”
