Sandy Brondello’s heated exchange with officials during Friday night’s game has now cost the Toronto Tempo head coach more than just a moment of frustration. The WNBA has suspended Brondello for one game without pay after a comment she made about Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese became the center of a rapidly escalating controversy.

The incident occurred during Toronto’s 111-92 loss to Atlanta at Coca-Cola Coliseum. With the Tempo trailing and center Nyara Sabally down on the court after a foul involving Reese, Brondello was heard directing her frustration toward the officials and saying, “Angel, she’s a protected species.”

The WNBA announced the suspension Saturday, calling Brondello’s comment inappropriate and reminding coaches and team personnel that they’re expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and respect. The punishment comes despite the Australian coach issuing an apology to Reese before the league announced its decision.

Brondello said her frustration was aimed at the officiating and the circumstances surrounding Sabally’s injury, not Reese personally. However, she acknowledged that the phrase she used carried a deeper impact than she intended, particularly because of its potential implications involving Black women in the league.

“Angel, I’m sorry,” Brondello wrote in her apology. “Last night, in the emotion of the moment after Nyara Sabally’s injury, I used a phrase that I shouldn’t have used, and I take full responsibility for that.”

She added that her words had unfairly placed the focus on Reese and said she understood why the comment had caused concern. Brondello also expressed regret for the impact her choice of words could have beyond the immediate basketball argument.

The controversy began late in Friday’s game. Reese went up for a play near the basket as Sabally made contact and went down. Officials ruled a foul, while Sabally required attention from Toronto’s medical staff before leaving the sequence. Brondello’s frustration boiled over as she questioned the officiating crew.

The game itself was already a difficult night for the Tempo. Atlanta pulled away after leading 48-47 at halftime, eventually winning by 19 points. Reese finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds, recording her 17th double-double of the season, while Naz Hillmon scored a career-high 24 points for the Dream.

Toronto’s problems extended beyond the officiating. The Tempo committed 20 turnovers, which Atlanta converted into 29 points, and the defeat marked Toronto’s sixth loss in seven games. The result made Brondello’s outburst even more significant because it came during a game in which her team was struggling to contain Atlanta’s offense and physical presence.

Reese later responded to the controversy on social media, resharing a post about Brondello’s comment and writing, “ARE WE SURPRISED?!” alongside a clown emoji while tagging the coach. That response quickly added another layer to an incident that had already begun drawing attention across the WNBA.

For Brondello, the suspension now creates an immediate challenge for Toronto. The former WNBA championship-winning coach will miss one game without pay, leaving the Tempo to navigate its next contest without the person responsible for leading the team from the sideline.

The league’s decision also reflects the growing scrutiny surrounding comments, physical play and conduct in a WNBA season that has already produced several heated incidents. With the league’s profile continuing to grow, coaches and players are facing greater attention not only for what happens between the lines but also for the words used during emotionally charged moments.

Brondello’s apology may have addressed her intent, but the WNBA made clear that intent alone didn’t erase the impact of the remark. The league ultimately chose to discipline the Toronto coach, ensuring that a heated argument over a foul call would have consequences beyond the final score.

And with Toronto scheduled to face Atlanta again on August 10, the controversy may not disappear quickly. The next meeting between the Tempo and Dream will inevitably carry extra attention, especially after a 111-92 game that produced a suspension, a public apology and one of the most talked-about coaching controversies of the WNBA season.
