The Detroit Lions just made one thing crystal clear: they believe Jack Campbell is the future of their defense, and they were willing to spend huge money to prove it.
Detroit officially locked up the star linebacker with a massive four-year, $81 million contract extension that includes a staggering $51.5 million guaranteed. The deal keeps Campbell in Detroit through the 2030 NFL season and instantly places him among the highest-paid off-ball linebackers in football.
At $20.25 million annually, Campbell now trails only Fred Warner among off-ball linebackers in average yearly salary. That’s elite company for a player who entered the league just three years ago and has rapidly transformed into the centerpiece of Detroit’s defense.
And honestly, after the season Campbell just delivered, the Lions probably felt they had no choice but to pay him now before the price climbed even higher.
The former Iowa Hawkeyes standout exploded during the 2025 season, finishing with 176 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and three forced fumbles while starting all 17 games. He earned First-Team All-Pro honors and made the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career.
Even more impressive, Campbell became the only NFL player last season to record at least 150 tackles and five sacks. According to NFL Research, he was also the only player since at least 2000 to post 160-plus tackles and five-plus sacks in a single season.
That kind of production changed everything for Detroit.
When the Lions declined Campbell’s fifth-year rookie option earlier this offseason, many fans were surprised. The option reportedly would’ve cost Detroit around $21.9 million for the 2027 season a number inflated because outside linebackers and edge rushers are grouped into the same salary category.
But behind the scenes, the organization clearly had a bigger plan.
Instead of locking themselves into a one-year option, Detroit moved aggressively to secure Campbell long-term with a structure that gives them more flexibility while ensuring their defensive leader remains in place for years. It was a calculated gamble, and now the Lions have one of the NFL’s premier linebackers entering his prime under contract through 2030.
Campbell, who was selected 18th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has been remarkably durable since arriving in Detroit. He hasn’t missed a single game in his NFL career and has already piled up 402 tackles and 8.5 sacks across 51 appearances.
Inside the organization, there’s little debate about how valuable he’s become.
“This is Jack Campbell’s defense,” Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard said earlier this offseason. “Everyone in that locker room knows it.”
That statement says everything.
The Lions have spent the past few years building one of the NFL’s toughest young rosters under general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell. While Detroit’s offense often grabs headlines thanks to explosive stars like Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jack Campbell has quietly become the emotional engine of the defense.
He flies sideline to sideline. He diagnoses plays quickly. He pressures quarterbacks. He stops the run. And perhaps most importantly, teammates trust him completely.
That leadership matters for a franchise trying to take the next step toward a Super Bowl.
After winning back-to-back NFC North titles and reaching the NFC Championship Game during this current era, expectations around Detroit have changed dramatically. Last season’s disappointing 9-8 finish and playoff miss only intensified the pressure on the organization heading into 2026.
The Lions responded by making sure one of their most important players isn’t going anywhere.
Shortly after news of the extension broke, Campbell made it clear that he sees unfinished business in Detroit.

“I’m excited to be here long term,” Campbell said in a message shared by the team. “Now it’s time to go win a Super Bowl.”
That mentality is exactly why Detroit prioritized him.
What makes this extension even more significant is Campbell’s age. He won’t turn 26 until later this year, meaning the Lions are investing in a player who may still be years away from reaching his full ceiling. Compared to other top-paid linebackers across the league, Campbell is notably younger, giving Detroit confidence that his best football could still be ahead of him.
The deal could also signal what’s coming next for Detroit’s talented 2023 draft class.
Campbell became the first member of that loaded group to receive a major long-term extension, but he likely won’t be the last. The Lions are also expected to continue discussions involving Gibbs, tight end Sam LaPorta, and defensive back Brian Branch.
That draft class has already reshaped the franchise, helping Detroit pile up 36 wins, two division titles, and deep playoff runs over the past few seasons.
Now, the Lions are betting big that Jack Campbell will remain at the center of everything.
And based on what he showed last season, Detroit may have just secured one of the smartest defensive investments in football.
