Megadeth Hints ‘Rust in Peace’ Follow-Up Album — Fans Prepare for the Metal Second Coming

In what might be the most exciting news for thrash metal fans in decades, Megadeth has set the metal world talking by hinting at a follow-up to their seminal 1990 masterpiece Rust in Peace. The iconic band, led by lead singer Dave Mustaine, shared a mysterious message on their social media accounts Tuesday:

“Sometimes the past deserves a second blast. RIP II?”

Together with a grainy black-and-white photo that depicts — from the heavy metal imagination, at least — an antiquated control room, and the instantly recognizable Vic Rattlehead logo, the announcement left fans to puzzle over what was going on.

Rust in Peace is mostly known as one of the best metal albums of all time and also includes classics such as “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due,” “Hangar 18,” and “Tornado of Souls.” Famous for its intricate guitar work, socially-minded lyrics, and unholy speed, the album established Megadeth as a core member of the “Big Four” with Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. A follow-up has been a long-held dream among fans — and it may finally be coming true.

Rumours were further fueled when guitarist Kiko Loureiro, who is currently taking a break from the band, responded with “It’s real” to a fan’s post about RIP II. To make matters even worse (or even better, who knows?) Megadeth’s legendary Rust in Peace (–knots) lead guitarist Marty Friedman has recently rejoined the band on stage in Japan, causing fans to dream of him also featuring on the new material.

Dave Mustaine has yet to issue a title, track list or release date, but during a newly-released interview, he teased, “We have something very special we’re working on right now -– it’s like a spiritual sequel to one of our most famous records. The band is said to be in the studio with producer Chris Rakestraw (Dystopia, The Sick, the Dying… and the Dead!).
