Health Warning Issued Over Surge in Fake Eno Products in Local Markets
By Staff Reporter | June 9, 2025

Authorities have issued a public health warning following a surge in the distribution of fake Eno antacid products in local markets across several towns. The counterfeit powders, which are visually similar to the original Eno brand, have been linked to a spike in reports of nausea, stomach irritation, and, in extreme cases, food poisoning.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the fake products are being sold in local shops and street stalls, often at discounted prices. The packaging is nearly identical to the original, making it difficult for the average consumer to detect the difference without close inspection.

“We’re seeing a dangerous increase in the number of counterfeit Eno packets being sold, especially in rural and suburban markets,” said Dr. Sangeeta Rao, a senior FDA official. “Some of these products contain harmful additives, including industrial-grade bicarbonate and unregulated food coloring.”

The fake Eno has reportedly caused more than 75 hospitalizations in the last two weeks alone. Victims have described a “burning sensation” after consumption, along with vomiting and abdominal pain. In one case, a 42-year-old man from Bhagalpur reportedly lost consciousness after ingesting the counterfeit powder following a spicy meal.

Law enforcement agencies have launched a nationwide investigation to trace the origin of the counterfeit product. Preliminary reports suggest that the fake Eno is being manufactured in illegal backyard operations, where hygiene and safety standards are virtually nonexistent.

Authorities are advising consumers to buy Eno only from trusted pharmacies and to check for specific markers such as the official QR code, batch number, and holographic seal on the packaging.

“Your stomach’s best friend shouldn’t be your worst enemy,” said health activist Ramesh Kulkarni. “Fake medicine is not just fraud—it’s attempted murder.”

Anyone experiencing adverse symptoms after consuming suspected fake Eno is urged to seek medical attention immediately and report the incident to the nearest health office.
