On New Year’s Day, Iowa women’s basketball put on another spectacular display, with sophomore point guard Chit-Chat Wright at the center of it all.

Wright’s career-best performance helped the Hawkeyes defeat a ranked opponent. At a thrilling Carver-Hawkeye Arena, No. 14 Iowa (12–2, 3–0 Big Ten) defeated No. 25 Nebraska (12–2, 1–2 Big Ten) 86–76 thanks to Wright’s breakthrough performance. In addition to keeping Iowa undefeated in conference play, the victory strengthened the team’s developing reputation as a self-assured, proven unit early in Big Ten play.

‎Wright was an electric floor general who stood five feet four inches tall. She led all scorers and set the tone for Iowa from the beginning to the end with a career-high 24 points. Wright thanked her teammates for allowing her to play aggressively and trust her gut after the game. Wright remarked, “I’ll say my team gives me a lot of confidence and also they put a lot of trust in me.” I simply know that they will support me no matter what I do. We’re going together whether it’s right or wrong.

‎Every possession demonstrated that trust. Wright played 39 minutes, managing the tempo, taking advantage of opportunities to attack, and coolly moving to the free-throw line when Nebraska attempted to slow her down. She was almost perfect at the stripe, going 11-for-12 on free throws, finished 5-for-12 from the field, and made 3 of 5 shots from beyond the arc. Her influence extended far beyond her ability to score. Wright continuously made astute reads in the face of Nebraska’s defensive pressure, contributing three assists, two steals, and a rebound. She appeared at ease in control of the situation, whether it was locating an open teammate or pulling up with assurance when defenders faltered.

‎Wright said that rather than using forceful shots, the performance was the result of rhythm and patience. She explained, “You just kind of reach a close state, and then within the game, you just make the right reads.” “The ball will eventually return to you if you don’t try to force anything. Then simply make the correct pass or knock down the shots. That’s also what makes me feel confident.

‎That calm was exactly what Iowa needed. Nebraska was highly motivated and had the same overall record going into the game. They kept pushing the Hawkeyes all afternoon. However, Iowa responded with timely baskets, defensive stops, and consistent play every time the Cornhuskers threatened to close the gap. Wright consistently delivered in crucial moments, giving Carver-Hawkeye Arena its customary edge. Her late-game ability to make contact and convert at the free-throw line was crucial in helping Iowa keep control as the clock ran out.

‎For an Iowa team that continues to adapt in the wake of offseason changes while preserving its competitive advantage, the victory represented another significant milestone. The Hawkeyes, who are 3-0 in Big Ten play, have demonstrated a variety of winning strategies, including balanced scoring, tenacious defense, or, in this instance, a standout guard stepping up to the plate. Wright’s performance also highlighted her developing leadership role. Even though she is just starting her college career, she already exudes poise beyond her years, combining self-assurance with a grasp of team-first basketball.

‎There won’t be much time for the Hawkeyes to celebrate. Iowa’s focus now shifts to the road, where it will try to maintain momentum against Northwestern (6–8, 0–3 Big Ten). Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. CT on January 5 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois. The Big Ten Network will broadcast the game. Wright’s performance might be even more valuable as conference play heats up. New Year’s Day was more than just a ranked victory for Iowa; it was another indication that this team is settling into a rhythm, developing mutual trust, and gaining confidence one possession at a time.

‎The Hawkeyes may have a higher ceiling than many anticipated going into the heart of Big Ten play, if Chit-Chat Wright’s career day is any indication.
