IOWA CITY— Not a single play or player received the loudest applause of the afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It happened to a former player who was on the visitor’s bench following the first quarter.
Molly Davis, a graduate assistant at the University of Evansville, is not wearing the iconic headband she wore when she played at the height of Iowa women’s basketball. After returning, Davis remarked, “It felt really good to be back.” “I’m really appreciative of the two years I’ve been here. That was unthinkable to me as a child. It was incredible to see the Hawkeye supporters sporting my NIL shirts.

Davis was Caitlin Clark’s go-to backup point guard during the 2022–2023 and 2023–24 seasons, which concluded with Iowa in the NCAA championship game. She had already given a performance at Central Michigan. “I have to give a huge shoutout to Coach Raina (Harmon),” Davis said, referring to the former Iowa assistant who is now the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast. “Without her, I wouldn’t be here.”
Davis is busy because Evansville only has two full-time assistant coaches. She described it as “pretty hands-on.” “I scout a lot.” This game, which was a 119-43 Iowa thrashing, was arranged primarily because of Davis’ attendance. “I adore that child,” stated Iowa coach Jan Jensen. “Players from that era agree that we probably wouldn’t do many of the things we did those two seasons without Molly Davis.” What does Davis think of the current Iowa squad? She remarked, “They’re really freaking good.”
