Following their preseason victory, Iowa women’s basketball provides an injury update.

Head coach Jan Jensen addressed the media regarding the injury status of sophomores Teagan Mallegni and Chazadi “Chit-Chat” Wright after Iowa women’s basketball defeated Division II-level Ashland 104-63 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the Hawkeyes’ only preseason game of the 2025–26 season.

‎After being fouled by an Ashland player who unintentionally touched the 6-foot-1 sophomore guard, Mallegni left the game in the first quarter. Mallegni hobbled off the court and made his way to the locker room for evaluation after the contact. Mallegni did make a comeback to the Hawkeyes’ bench during the second quarter, but she would not play again. Although I haven’t heard from the trainer, Teagan’s strange foul was quite strange. She was going to try to play, but she’s having trouble applying pressure to her ankle, so it’s kind of a freak thing,” Jensen said. “She just hit her ankle and really tweaked it in a weird way.”

‎I’m not sure if it was a one-day event or if it’s a longer-term one. Tomorrow, we’ll know a bit more. Regarding Wright, the transfer guard seemed to be experiencing a cramp in her left calf, which led to the injury late in the fourth quarter at midcourt. Jensen substituted Wright out for the rest of the game because the Hawkeyes already had a significant lead. Jensen continued, “I think ‘Chit-Chat’ was just cramping.”

‎”I need to get some other people’s minutes at that point, and I believe it was just a really bad cramp.” Hopefully, they’re both just strange things. Mallegni and Wright will undoubtedly have plenty of time to receive treatment for their illnesses before Iowa’s regular-season opener against Southern on November 3. Over the course of the next few days, it will be important to monitor the condition of both sophomore guards.

‎Big Ten Plus (Subscription Required) will broadcast Iowa’s game against Southern on Monday starting at 6:30 p.m. CT from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
