Everton Announce £35M Signing of Midfield Wonderkid — Lampard Insists ‘The Engine We Needed’

Everton have announced the transfer of highly rated young midfield star Luka Vukovic, signing the 22-year-old from Bundesliga club RB Leipzig for £35 million in a statement of intent for the new Premier League campaign. The Serbian international, who had been attracting plenty of interest from a number of Europe’s big clubs, brings a growing reputation and some glowing references to Goodison Park.

Blue manager Frank Lampard, when announcing the signing, called Vukovic “the engine we needed”, in reference to his immense work rate, tactical nous, and creativity. “He’s the type of player who’s going to give you everything — he can run all over the place, he’s got that vision, and he has the courage to take the game by the scruff of the neck,” Lampard said. “We’ve lacked a bit of dynamic in midfield and Luka is the figure and personality to do that to the whole squad.”

Vukovic made waves last season in Germany for his steady production rate, scoring 7 goals and adding 9 assists in all competitions and earning plaudits for his maturity and leadership despite his age. Famed for his neat passing and combative style of play, he should easily fit into an Everton midfield already containing Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye.

“I’ve been following the Premier League since I was a young boy,” he said at his first press conference. “Everton is a very large club with rich history and lots of passionate fans. I’m here to give everything that I have and help move this club forward. It’s also a dream come true to work with one of the legends of the game in Frank Lampard.”

The signing is Everton’s biggest since then, and it is viewed as one of several indications that the club is serious about forcing its way back into the top half of the table — and beyond.
