The Tennessee Titans have made a savvy and yet expensive play to improve from veteran left tackle Dan Moore Jr. to an epic four-year, $82 million deal. The contract makes Moore one of the highest-paid offensive linemen in the N.F.L. — and indicates that the Titans are all in on keeping their quarterbacks upright and regaining mirror-rattling power along the line.
Moore, 25, played his first four seasons with the Steelers, where he started 49 games and was known for his durability, toughness and reliable protection of the blind side. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Moore adds a physical presence and leadership to a Titans offensive line that has dealt with its share of inconsistency and injuries the past few seasons.
“Dan coming aboard is another step—both big and smart—in building the type of offensive identity we want in Tennessee,” the new head coach, Brian Callahan, said in a release. “He is a starting corner in this league, he is a guy who is going to work his tail off, and he is a tone-setter on every single play.”
The Titans’ offensive line was one of the worst in the NFL last season, giving up the third-most sacks in the league and dealing a serious blow to the passing game and offensive flow. With young quarterbacks Will Levis and rookie Cam Ward fighting it out for the starting role, the front office made shoring up the line a priority in the offseason.
Moore should step in at left tackle from Day 1, providing the Titans with a much-needed foundation to build around on the edge with other key spots being manned by a young, re-made unit. He also allows the team to move other linemen back to their natural spots, adding depth and versatility at every position.
