BREAKING: Luis Gil Launches Live BP at Yankee Stadium — Set for Return Next Month After Rehab!

BRONX, NY — A major step forward in the Yankees’ 2025 season came today as flame-throwing right-hander Luis Gil threw live batting practice at Yankee Stadium for the first time since suffering a high-grade lat strain. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year faced live hitters and looked sharp, signaling he’s well on track for a highly anticipated return next month.

Gil, who went down early in the season with what was initially feared to be a long-term setback, threw around 20 pitches to bullpen catcher Peter Serruto and a team staffer. According to reporters on site, Gil showed excellent velocity and sharp command — a reassuring sight for fans and coaches alike.

“It was a huge step,” said manager Aaron Boone. “His intensity looked right. His body’s responding the way we want it to. Now it’s about building him back up.”

The Yankees will increase Gil’s pitch count incrementally over the next couple of weeks, aiming to get him into a minor league rehab assignment before the All-Star break. Barring setbacks, sources say Gil could rejoin the rotation by late July or early August.

Before his injury, Gil was building on an impressive 2024 rookie campaign where he posted a 2.97 ERA and racked up 153 strikeouts over 135 innings. His electric fastball and swing-and-miss slider made him one of the brightest young arms in baseball — and a key part of the Yankees’ long-term pitching core.

The timing couldn’t be better. The Yankees’ rotation has been battling inconsistency, with several starters on innings limits and a need for a durable, top-end presence. Gil’s return could be the X-factor that stabilizes the staff for a postseason push.

Veteran outfielder Aaron Judge said after practice, “We all love seeing Luis out there again. He’s a warrior. And we know what he brings.”

Fans are equally excited, flooding social media with posts celebrating the update. With Gil’s comeback officially in motion, the Yankees just got one step closer to full strength — and possibly, October dominance.
