Chris Poland Claims Dave Mustaine Hindered His Career: Longstanding Tensions Resurface

The world of thrash metal has seen its share of feuds, but few rival the enduring conflict between ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland and frontman Dave Mustaine. In a recent interview, Poland leveled serious allegations, stating that Mustaine actively damaged his career after his departure from the band.

Poland, who contributed lead guitar on Megadeth’s influential early albums Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good! and Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying?, has largely stayed silent on the reasons behind his exit. Now, he’s speaking out—claiming Mustaine’s actions in the aftermath derailed his professional path.

“It felt like dragging a 50-pound weight behind me,” Poland said. “People knew what I could do, but I wasn’t getting the calls. Opportunities dried up.”

According to Poland, Mustaine’s influence in the music business, coupled with derogatory comments made both publicly and privately, contributed to a quiet blacklisting. Though his talent was never in question, Poland suggests that Mustaine’s reach and reputation played a key role in shutting him out of potential gigs.

Despite this, Poland found ways to keep moving forward—most notably through his work with jazz-fusion group OHM and his brief collaboration on Megadeth’s 2004 album The System Has Failed. Still, he acknowledges that the fallout from his exit left lasting scars.

When asked whether he would ever consider playing with Megadeth again, Poland didn’t rule it out completely—but set clear boundaries.

“If it was something that really benefited my family and helped heal some of that history, maybe. But I wouldn’t do it just for show.”

So far, Dave Mustaine has not publicly responded to the comments, and it’s unclear if he will.

While fans continue to speculate on the possibility of reconciliation, the emotional weight of the past still looms large over any potential reunion. One thing is certain: the complicated relationship between Chris Poland and Megadeth remains unresolved—and as intense as ever.
