Patriots May Release Receiver Javon Baker Amid Concerns About Performance and Behavior
The New England Patriots may soon part ways with second-year wide receiver Javon Baker, a 2024 fourth-round draft pick selected during former coach Jerod Mayo’s brief tenure. Despite signing a four-year, \$4.8 million contract, Baker’s future with the team appears uncertain, with his current standing described as “tenuous” by team insiders.
Although it is early in the offseason, and OTA sessions are non-contact and voluntary, Baker seems to have already drawn negative attention for his actions on and off the field. During a recent organized team activity, head coach Mike Vrabel reportedly had to escort Baker off the field for a one-on-one discussion following behavior that appeared to frustrate the coaching staff. This is not the first time Baker’s conduct has raised concerns. As a rookie, he demonstrated similar tendencies during OTAs, which then-coach Mayo acknowledged by stating the receiver “has a lot to learn.”
Drafted at No. 110 overall out of Central Florida, Baker was projected to be a potential average starter according to scouting evaluations. However, his first season was underwhelming. He played in 11 games but started just one and caught only one pass for 12 yards—an underachievement that further highlights his limited impact. That lone reception didn’t come until the final game of the season, during which third-string quarterback Joe Milton III delivered a surprisingly strong performance.
Baker received only three targets from 2024 first-round pick Drake Maye, all unsuccessful, and none in key moments. During the recent OTA, Maye did not work with Baker at all, who instead caught a deep pass from undrafted free agent quarterback Ben Woolridge. While the catch was praised for its athleticism, it came with a push-off on undrafted cornerback Brandon Crossley. Baker’s decision to celebrate alone rather than return quickly to the huddle seemed to further alienate him from teammates and coaches.
Adding to the concern, Baker’s rookie year included off-field issues. He suffered a concussion in a car accident, missed Week 14, and stirred controversy by posting a social media rant about a traffic ticket at Boston’s Logan Airport.

Given his minimal production, questionable judgment, and now slipping further down the depth chart, Baker’s roster spot is far from secure. Patriots insiders and media outlets alike are skeptical of his chances to remain with the team.
