With the Buffalo Sabres heading into the offseason, much of the buzz centers on their \$23 million in available cap space and how it might be used. A large portion of that money is expected to go toward signing Ryann McLeod, JJ Peterka, and Bowen Byram.

However, with Byram likely to be dealt in a trade, Buffalo could have the flexibility to make a significant move in free agency. While acquiring a star like Mitch Marner seems highly unlikely, the Sabres could set their sights on a more attainable target: Vancouver winger Brock Boeser.

Boeser is coming off a solid season, recording 25 goals and 50 points in 75 games. The main downside was his -25 plus-minus rating. Though it wasn’t quite up to the level of his breakout 40-goal campaign two seasons ago, the 28-year-old remains in his prime, which bodes well for Buffalo’s offensive ambitions.

Boeser’s next deal is rumored to fall in the \$7–8 million range annually. But given concerns about his defensive play in two of the last three seasons, the Sabres might be able to sign him for closer to \$6.75 million—or possibly even less.

With the NHL’s salary cap projected to rise to \$95.5 million next season, Buffalo must be ready to compete financially with other teams to land experienced talent like Boeser.

Fans are anxious for the team to take action and capitalize on their current roster. There’s growing pressure on management to bring in impactful free agents who can help the Sabres compete in the tough Atlantic Division.

While the Sabres are understandably wary of overpaying for a big-name player, they might need to consider alternative approaches—like offering an extra year or two on a contract, a tactic often used by larger market teams.

After missing the playoffs for 14 consecutive seasons, the Sabres are at a crossroads. With free agency just five weeks away, the front office has a real opportunity to reshape the team’s direction through bold, strategic moves.
