Carolina Panthers Re-Sign Former Steelers Wide Receiver T.J. Luther. Just one week after letting him go, the Carolina Panthers have brought back wide receiver T.J. Luther, who was previously with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Luther’s return follows the release of wide receiver Moose Muhammad, who was waived with an injury designation. This roster adjustment opens up another opportunity for Luther to prove himself in Carolina.
Luther, 24, initially joined the Panthers practice squad late last season and later signed a futures contract following the end of the year. Despite being cut recently, Carolina clearly sees potential in him, especially after releasing Muhammad. That said, Luther still faces a tough path to secure a roster spot. The Panthers recently drafted wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, adding more competition to an already crowded receiving room.
Before his time in Carolina, Luther spent last training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He participated in two preseason games but was ultimately released during the final roster cuts. After his brief stint in Pittsburgh, the Green Bay Packers picked him up, but his time with them was short-lived as well.
Luther’s professional journey has been marked by multiple stops. After going undrafted out of Gardner-Webb University, he first signed with the New York Jets. He later spent two seasons with the New England Patriots but was released during Organized Team Activities (OTAs).
At Gardner-Webb, Luther stood out as a top performer. In 2022, he earned First-Team All-Big South honors, showcasing his athletic ability and consistency on the field. Standing 5-foot-11, he clocked a 4.50-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, a solid mark that highlighted his speed and agility. His collegiate production and measurable traits have earned him several looks from NFL teams, though he has yet to find a long-term home.
With another chance now in front of him in Carolina, Luther will aim to make an impression during offseason workouts and training camp. While the odds may be stacked against him, his return to the Panthers suggests the coaching staff believes he still has something to offer.
