Colts’ Bold Announcement for Arizona State QB in Early 2026 NFL Mock Draft Sends Shockwaves Through Fanbase. Even though the 2025 NFL Draft just wrapped up, early predictions for 2026 are already surfacing. In a recent “way-too-early” mock draft by PFF, the Indianapolis Colts are projected to take Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt with the eighth overall pick:

8. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: QB SAM LEAVITT, ARIZONA STATE

Leavitt impressed in his first year as the Sun Devils’ starter, stepping up after Cam Skattebo left for the NFL. He earned an 88.9 PFF grade—ninth among qualified quarterbacks—and his low turnover-worthy play rate (1.1%) tied for third-best. With further development alongside standout receiver Jordyn Tyson, Leavitt could have a breakout season.

It’s still early to know if Indianapolis will be in a position to draft a quarterback that high in 2026, but it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Leavitt’s Journey So Far

Leavitt first drew attention at West Linn High School in Oregon, where he completed 70% of his passes for 3,065 yards and 36 touchdowns during his senior year, leading the team to a 12-1 record and a state championship.

He began his college career at Michigan State in 2023, appearing in four games and throwing for 139 yards and two touchdowns. After one season, Leavitt transferred to Arizona State, where he was named the starting quarterback immediately. In 2024, he threw for 2,885 yards and 24 touchdowns, adding 443 rushing yards and five rushing scores. His efforts earned him Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year honors and helped Arizona State tie its record with 11 wins and earn its first-ever College Football Playoff berth.

The Colts’ Current Quarterback Situation

Indianapolis currently has four quarterbacks: Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones, Riley Leonard, and Jason Bean. Richardson, drafted fourth overall in 2023, has struggled with injuries and inconsistency. Jones was brought in this offseason to challenge Richardson for the starting job. Leonard, a recent sixth-round pick, is competing with Bean for the third-string role.

Should Indy Target a QB in 2026?

Whether the Colts should draft Leavitt or another quarterback in the first round depends heavily on Richardson’s performance in 2025. If he shows improvement, they may not need to pursue a QB. However, if neither Richardson nor Jones plays well, the team could end up with a top draft pick and a pressing need at quarterback.

Paul White of Athlon Sports commented on the worst-case scenario: both Richardson and Jones underperforming, which could leave the Colts looking to start over at QB in 2026.

As always in the NFL, anything can happen. The situation will become clearer as the 2025 season unfolds.
