Yankees Hit with More Bad News Following Gerrit Cole Update

After Gerrit Cole’s update, the Yankees receive more bad news. It seems like a full-on hurricane in the Bronx, and the Yankees were already enduring bad weather.

The AL Cy Young winner and ace Gerrit Cole had to have Tommy John surgery earlier this week, which was a major blow to New York. Another important player could be sidelined for a long time, possibly the entire season, just when it looked like things couldn’t get much worse. After Gerrit Cole’s update, the Yankees received bad news.

Giancarlo Stanton, who was already fighting tennis elbow in both arms, is also facing a persistent calf ailment, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Stanton’s season is probably finished if he needs surgery, and the Yankees say a return by Memorial Day is the best-case scenario. After Gerrit Cole’s update, the Yankees received bad news.

It would be devastating for New York to lose Stanton for a significant portion of the season. After hitting 27 home runs and driving in 72 RBIs the previous season, he went above and beyond in October to win ALCS MVP as the Yankees advanced to the World Series.

The Yankees’ path to winning another American League pennant has become much more difficult with Cole out and Stanton’s health in doubt.

In search of pitching assistance, the Yankees are considering trade options for Dylan Cease of the Padres.

With Luis Gil out for at least three months and Gerrit Cole out for the season due to elbow surgery, the Yankees are frantically trying to strengthen their rotation. Additionally, they appear to be aiming for one of the greatest arms available.

The Yankees are one of nine teams that have contacted the San Diego Padres regarding right-hander Dylan Cease, according to New York Post insider Jon Heyman. According to reports, the Mets, Cubs, and two other clubs are monitoring the situation, and every AL East team is in the running. After Gerrit Cole’s update, the Yankees received bad news.

Entering the last year of his contract with San Diego, Cease is in high demand, particularly in light of speculations that the Padres would have to reduce salary. They are reluctant to move him before Opening Day, according to insiders.

Cease, who led the league with 33 starts, a 14-11 record, a 3.47 ERA, and a career-high 224 strikeouts in 189 1/3 innings, was a workhorse for San Diego after being traded from the White Sox the previous season. His reputation as a dependable frontline starter was cemented when he finished fourth in the NL Cy Young voting.

Cease would be a game-changer for the Yankees. Although New York’s farm system has been dwindling recently, making a blockbuster deal more difficult, general manager Brian Cashman may need to be inventive given the limited external choices available.

Cease would go right into a rotation with Clarke Schmidt, Max Fried, Carlos Rodón, and Marcus Stroman if they can make it work. It wouldn’t be shocking to see the Yankees make a serious push for the kind of long-lasting, top-notch arm they sorely need going into the 2025 season, especially given Cashman’s track record of closing deals at the last minute.
