A heated moment between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever quickly turned into one of the WNBA’s biggest talking points of the night after DiJonai Carrington was ejected for a hard foul on Sophie Cunningham — and then appeared to take the controversy directly to social media.
Carrington was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and automatically ejected after striking Cunningham high on the left side of the head during a first-quarter fast break. The decision came after officials reviewed the play, turning an already physical sequence into a major flashpoint.
But what happened after Carrington left the court is what sent the incident into an entirely different conversation.
Shortly after the ejection, Carrington posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever” on Threads. The message, posted while she was reportedly in the locker room, appeared to suggest that race played a role in the treatment she received from officials during the incident.
The Foul That Changed Everything
The sequence unfolded with Cunningham running ahead on a breakaway and attempting a right-handed layup. Carrington chased the Fever guard down and made contact with the left side of Cunningham’s head with her arm, sending Cunningham to the floor.
Cunningham quickly got back to her feet, and the situation became tense almost immediately. The two players moved toward each other before teammates and staff stepped in to separate them.
Officials then reviewed the contact and upgraded the original foul to a Flagrant 2, which under WNBA rules resulted in Carrington’s immediate ejection.
For Carrington, the decision was particularly costly because she had already provided an offensive spark for Chicago. She had scored eight points off the bench before being sent to the locker room, according to reports from the game.
And suddenly, the Sky had lost one of its contributors while the game itself was becoming overshadowed by the confrontation.
Cunningham Had a Very Different Reaction
Cunningham didn’t treat the incident as proof of racial bias.
Speaking after Indiana’s 90-86 victory, she described the contact as unnecessary but said she wasn’t particularly bothered by what happened afterward. She also pointed out that she had previously been ejected for a similar type of incident, directly challenging the idea that the ruling against Carrington was based on Cunningham being white.
That response adds another layer to an already complicated story.
Fever head coach Stephanie White also supported the officials’ decision, saying the ruling was appropriate while indicating that she didn’t believe Carrington necessarily intended to seriously hurt Cunningham.
Carrington, meanwhile, did not speak to reporters after the game, leaving her social-media post as the clearest public indication of how she viewed the controversy.
Why the Post Is Drawing So Much Attention
The timing of Carrington’s message is a major reason the incident has exploded beyond the basketball court.
Rather than simply becoming another debate about whether a hard foul deserved a Flagrant 2, the words “WHITE PRIVILEGE” immediately introduced race into the conversation. That has placed additional attention on both Carrington and the Fever, particularly because Cunningham has already become one of the WNBA’s most recognizable and polarizing players away from the court.
Carrington’s career has also previously intersected with heated discussions surrounding race and the WNBA. In 2024, she publicly shared racist abuse she had received online following a physical playoff series involving Indiana.
This latest episode, however, is different because Carrington herself is now at the center of the controversy.
The Sky have indicated that the situation will be addressed internally, according to reporting, while Carrington declined postgame comments.
Indiana Walks Away With the Win
Amid all the controversy, the Fever still had a game to finish.
Indiana escaped with a 90-86 victory, with Cunningham contributing three points and two steals.
The final score, though, has almost become secondary to the confrontation, the ejection and Carrington’s explosive post.
What began as a physical play during a fast break has now become a much larger WNBA conversation one involving officiating, player accountability, race and the increasingly intense spotlight surrounding Indiana and Chicago.
And with Carrington’s “WHITE PRIVILEGE” message now circulating widely, the debate is unlikely to end with the final whistle.
