One of Iowa basketball’s biggest priorities in the 2027 recruiting class has made a major decision that could dramatically shape the next chapter of his career.

Fresh off another award-winning season in Illinois, four-star point guard Jaxson Davis has announced that he will leave Warren Township High School and spend his senior year at the newly established Monarch Academy in Kansas City, Kansas. The move places him in Nike’s prestigious EYBL Scholastic League, where he’ll face elite competition and continue building his reputation as one of the nation’s top guards.

For Iowa fans, the timing of the announcement adds even more intrigue. Despite holding offers from several powerhouse programs across the country, Davis recently revealed that his first official visit will be with the Hawkeyes on Sept. 19, giving Ben McCollum’s staff an important opportunity to strengthen their position in what has become a highly competitive recruitment.

Davis enters his final year of high school ranked No. 42 overall nationally in the 2027 class according to 247Sports. He’s also listed as the No. 11 point guard in the country and currently stands as the top-ranked player in Kansas following his transfer to Monarch Academy.

The 6-foot-1, 165-pound floor general has earned those rankings through consistent production and an impressive résumé that continues to grow.

During his junior season at Warren Township High School in Gurnee, Illinois, Davis averaged 23.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 3.5 steals per game. His all-around brilliance helped guide the Blue Devils to a 30-4 record and another deep postseason run.

Although Warren Township fell in the Illinois High School Association Class 4A sectional semifinals this season, the program had reached the state championship game just one year earlier in 2025, further highlighting the success Davis brought to the court.

His outstanding campaign earned him some of the highest individual honors available at the high school level. Davis captured Illinois Mr. Basketball and Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year honors for the second consecutive season, a rare accomplishment that cemented his status among the nation’s elite prospects.

Now, he’s preparing to take on a new challenge.

In a statement announcing his transfer, Davis explained that the opportunity to compete against the best players in the country played a major role in his decision.

“It is with great excitement, yet mixed emotions, that I announce my commitment to spend my senior year at Monarch Academy,” Davis wrote.

“My goal has always been to challenge myself, continue growing and become the best player I can be, and after careful consideration, I believe the opportunity to compete on the EYBL circuit will provide the highest level of competition and best prepare me for the transition from high school basketball to the high-major collegiate level.”

Monarch Academy is expected to become one of the newest powerhouses on the prep basketball scene thanks to its inclusion in the EYBL Scholastic League, which regularly showcases many of the country’s top prospects. For Davis, the move represents another step toward preparing for life at the collegiate level and eventually beyond.

As his profile continues to rise, so does the list of programs hoping to secure his commitment.

Davis already holds scholarship offers from numerous high-major schools. Several Big Ten rivals are firmly in the mix, including Michigan, Ohio State, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, and Purdue. Those schools have all made strong pushes for the dynamic point guard, setting up what could become one of the most closely watched recruiting battles in the 2027 class.

Yet Iowa remains firmly in the conversation.

The Hawkeyes’ coaching staff has made Davis a top priority, and his decision to schedule Iowa as the destination for his first official visit is certainly encouraging news for the program.

With Ben McCollum entering a new era in Iowa City, landing a player of Davis’ caliber would represent a significant statement for the future of Hawkeye basketball. Elite point guards capable of scoring, facilitating, and creating havoc defensively don’t come around often, and Davis has proven he can impact every aspect of the game.

His numbers speak for themselves.

Nearly 24 points per game. More than five rebounds and five assists. Over three steals a night. Two consecutive Illinois Mr. Basketball awards. Two straight Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year honors.

Those accomplishments have transformed Jaxson Davis from a talented prospect into one of the most sought-after guards in the nation.

Now, with a move to Monarch Academy and the EYBL Scholastic League on the horizon, the next stage of his journey is about to begin.

And as the recruiting race intensifies, Iowa will be hoping that September’s visit becomes the first step toward bringing one of the country’s brightest young stars to Iowa City.
