Wolverhampton Wanderers could be heading into a crucial week in their pursuit, with growing competition threatening to take one of their preferred midfield targets away from Molineux. The Wales international has emerged as a player Wolves reportedly want badly, but the race for his signature is becoming increasingly crowded.
The 22, currently belongs to Rennes after returning from a season-long loan at Leicester City. His situation has attracted serious attention in England after he scored 11 goals and registered four assists in 34 Championship appearances last season, despite Leicester ultimately suffering relegation.
Wolves’ interest isn’t new, but it appears to have intensified. Reports citing journalist Alan Nixon have described the club as “desperate” to sign
Jordan James, while Rennes are believed to be looking for around £10 million for a permanent transfer rather than another loan.
That price could prove significant because Wolves aren’t the only club watching closely. West Ham United, Middlesbrough and Burnley have all been linked with James, creating a genuine battle for a midfielder whose stock has risen sharply following his Championship campaign.
For Wolves, the attraction is easy to understand. James offers energy, physicality and an eye for goal from midfield, while his previous experience in the Championship means he wouldn’t need a lengthy adaptation period if Wolves are targeting an immediate promotion challenge.
His numbers at Leicester certainly caught attention. According to Opta’s career data, James played 2,130 Championship minutes, made 34 appearances and finished with 11 goals and four assists. Those figures are particularly impressive considering Leicester’s difficult campaign and eventual drop into League One.
There could also be a personal factor working in Wolves’ favour. James was born in Hereford, meaning a move to the West Midlands would keep him relatively close to home. That geographical advantage could become useful if Wolves can convince him that regular football under head coach César Peixoto is the right next step for his career.
But the decision may ultimately come down to the player. Reports suggest James has several options, and Wolves supporters are already debating whether the club can move quickly enough to win the race. Some fan discussions have even claimed that Wolves are pushing to get the deal completed quickly, although those reports remain unconfirmed.
Rennes, meanwhile, have little reason to rush into a deal. James remains under contract with the French club, and his successful loan spell has given them leverage in negotiations. A reported £10 million valuation means the French side can wait for competing clubs to show their hand before deciding which offer best suits them.
That leaves Wolves facing a fascinating situation. They appear to have made James a priority, but West Ham’s entry into the race could change the entire dynamic. If Wolves genuinely believe the midfielder is the answer to an important midfield need, waiting too long could be costly.
The next few days could therefore tell us plenty. Wolves need to convince James, satisfy Rennes and fend off their rivals. If they manage all three, James could become one of the most intriguing additions to Peixoto’s squad. If they don’t, a transfer that once looked within reach could suddenly disappear.
