Sunderland have been handed a fresh fitness concern ahead of their Premier League meeting with Brentford, with Habib Diarra emerging as a major doubt for Saturday’s trip to the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Black Cats head into the weekend with renewed confidence after finally getting their first league victory of the campaign. Wilson Isidor’s late strike against Fulham secured a valuable 1-0 win, giving Régis Le Bris and his players an important boost after their opening-day defeat.
But the mood has been tempered by concern surrounding Diarra.
The midfielder only came off the bench against Fulham before his afternoon was abruptly cut short. After spending just 18 minutes on the pitch, Diarra appeared to suffer a thigh problem and was unable to continue.
That immediately raised questions about whether he would be available for one of Sunderland’s most difficult assignments of the early season.
Le Bris has indicated that the problem does not appear to be particularly serious at this stage, but the club is still assessing the player. With the Brentford match arriving quickly, Sunderland will have to wait for a clearer medical assessment before knowing whether Diarra can play any part.
For Sunderland supporters, the timing could hardly be worse.
Diarra was brought in to provide energy and quality in midfield, and his ability to influence games could become increasingly important as the Premier League season develops. Losing him, even temporarily, would leave Le Bris with another selection problem to solve.
The situation is particularly frustrating because Sunderland had just produced a performance that suggested they were beginning to settle into life back in the Premier League.
The victory over Fulham was not spectacular, but it was effective. Sunderland remained disciplined, defended their goal with determination and eventually found the decisive moment through Isidor.
Diarra’s brief appearance was also encouraging before the injury interrupted his involvement.
Now the focus has shifted toward his recovery.
Sunderland already have another attacking player unavailable. Simon Adingra remains sidelined with an ankle injury and is not expected to return immediately. His absence reduces Le Bris’ options in wide areas and places additional responsibility on the players who are currently fit.
That makes the Diarra situation even more important.

Brentford will provide a completely different test. The Bees have made a strong start and have shown that they can cause problems with their movement, intensity and attacking quality. Sunderland will need their midfield to remain competitive throughout the match, particularly if Brentford manage to establish long spells of possession.
The Black Cats will therefore be hoping Diarra’s injury proves to be nothing more than a temporary scare.
There is still a possibility that the midfielder could recover in time, but Sunderland cannot afford to take unnecessary risks. With a long Premier League campaign ahead, protecting an important player may ultimately be more valuable than rushing him back for one fixture.
For Le Bris, the decision will come down to how Diarra responds to treatment and assessment before kickoff.
The manager can at least take encouragement from the depth beginning to develop within his squad. New arrivals are also competing for opportunities, meaning Sunderland have alternatives if changes are required.
Still, losing Diarra would be an unwelcome setback.
The Black Cats are looking to build momentum after their first league victory, and another positive result against Brentford would strengthen belief around the squad. But they will need to overcome the latest fitness concern before they can concentrate fully on the challenge ahead.
For now, Sunderland supporters will be watching closely for the next update.
The injury does not currently appear to be as severe as first feared, but until Diarra is cleared to return, uncertainty will remain over one of Sunderland’s important midfield options.
Saturday’s match could therefore begin with one major question hanging over the Black Cats: will Habib Diarra be fit enough to help Sunderland continue their positive start, or will his latest injury force Le Bris to find another solution?
For Sunderland, that answer could have a significant impact on their preparations for Brentford.
