Klay Thompson has never been short on confidence, but his latest message carries a different weight. As he prepares to begin a new chapter with the Miami Heat, the four-time NBA champion has made it clear that he is not arriving in South Beach simply to add another famous name to the roster. He wants to win, and he sees the 2026-27 season as an opportunity to prove something.
Thompson described the coming campaign as a “redemption season,” a statement that immediately put his mindset into focus. After two seasons with the Dallas Mavericks that did not unfold the way he hoped, the veteran guard is determined to show that he can still make a meaningful difference for a team chasing championships.
That belief was part of the reason Thompson chose Miami.
The 36-year-old could have remained in Dallas under his previous contract, but the Mavericks agreed to buy out the final year. Thompson then cleared waivers and joined the Heat on a two-year contract worth about $11.5 million, with the second season giving him a player option.
Money, however, was not the biggest factor in his decision.
Thompson reportedly left around $10 million on the table because he wanted another chance to compete at the highest level. For a player who has already experienced the feeling of winning four championships with the Golden State Warriors, that decision says plenty about what motivates him at this stage of his career.
“I’ve tasted winning before and there’s really nothing like it,” Thompson said during his Miami introduction.
Now, he has another opportunity.
Miami has assembled a dramatically different roster around stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, while Thompson gives the team something every contender needs: elite perimeter shooting. His career three-point percentage remains above 40 percent, and he enters the season fourth on the NBA’s all-time list for made three-pointers.
That shooting could become especially valuable alongside Antetokounmpo. Defenses cannot casually leave Thompson open, and his ability to stretch the floor could create additional driving lanes for Miami’s star forward. At the same time, Thompson believes he can contribute beyond simply standing behind the three-point line.
His declaration is therefore about more than scoring.
Thompson wants to demonstrate that he can still impact winning consistently. Injuries changed the course of his career, and his role evolved during his time in Dallas, where he eventually came off the bench. Rather than treating those changes as the end of his story, he appears determined to use them as motivation.
There is also an emotional element to his arrival in Miami. The move brings Thompson closer to family connections in the Bahamas, while Miami’s demanding basketball culture appealed to him. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has also praised Thompson’s experience, basketball intelligence, competitiveness and defensive pride.
The expectations will be enormous.
Miami already has championship ambitions after acquiring Antetokounmpo, and Thompson’s arrival only raises the pressure. Fans will expect him to knock down big shots, provide veteran leadership and remain dependable when games become tense.
For Thompson, though, the challenge seems personal as much as professional.
He knows the questions surrounding an aging shooter who has endured major injuries. He also knows that his reputation was built during some of the biggest moments in modern NBA history. His message suggests that he does not believe his best basketball story has already been written.
Instead, he sees Miami as a fresh opportunity to write another chapter.
The Heat will need Thompson to stay healthy, find his rhythm and embrace whatever role the team requires. If he can consistently provide his trademark shooting while bringing championship experience to a talented roster, Miami could become one of the league’s most intriguing teams.
Thompson has already won everything most players dream about. Now, he is chasing something different: another chance to prove that he can still help a team reach the top.
He clearly believes he still has plenty.
