Kate Martin’s remarkable journey has taken another inspiring turn, and this time it’s the opportunity she has been fighting for since the start of the season. After opening the year on a Player Development contract, the Los Angeles Sparks officially announced Monday that Martin has earned a standard WNBA contract, cementing her place on the team’s active roster in one of the most rewarding stories of the 2026 season.

The promotion comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding Martin’s future. Under the WNBA’s new Player Development system, players can practice and travel with their teams but are limited to 12 active game appearances before organizations must decide whether to sign them to a full contract or move on. The Sparks have now made their choice and it’s a significant vote of confidence in the former Iowa standout.

To create a roster spot for Martin, Los Angeles waived rookie guard Ta’Niya Latson, a difficult roster decision that immediately became one of the biggest talking points around the league. While the move drew mixed reactions, it also underscored how highly the Sparks value Martin’s versatility, experience and ability to contribute immediately.

For Martin, the promotion marks the latest chapter in a career that has been defined by resilience rather than shortcuts. Just two months ago, she was unexpectedly waived by the Golden State Valkyries despite averaging 6.2 points per game across 42 appearances during the 2025 season. Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, she quickly embraced a fresh opportunity in Los Angeles and went to work.

That commitment didn’t go unnoticed.

From the moment she joined the Sparks’ Player Development pool in May, Martin impressed coaches with her work ethic, defensive intensity and reliable perimeter shooting. General manager Raegan Pebley praised her as “a gifted shooter” whose toughness, defensive effort and unselfish style perfectly matched the organization’s culture.

Martin’s basketball résumé has never lacked substance.

Originally selected with the 18th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces, she appeared in 76 career WNBA games over her first two professional seasons, making six starts. During her rookie year, she shot 35.5 percent from three-point range while also converting an impressive 91.7 percent of her free throws before later joining the expansion Valkyries.

Long before reaching the professional level, Martin built an unforgettable legacy at Iowa.

Playing alongside Caitlin Clark, she helped lead the Hawkeyes to back-to-back NCAA championship game appearances while becoming the first player in program history to record at least 900 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 120 steals and 60 blocks. Her all-around game and leadership made her one of the most respected players in college basketball.

Those qualities translated well in Los Angeles.

Although her opportunities were limited under the developmental rules, Martin made every appearance count. She carved out a role as a dependable perimeter defender, knocked down timely three-pointers and brought consistent energy whenever called upon. At one point this season, she was shooting better than 40 percent from beyond the arc while providing valuable minutes off the bench, strengthening her case for a permanent roster spot.

Her best offensive outing came when she scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting against the Toronto Tempo, showing flashes of the confident scorer who starred at Iowa. Even after the Sparks returned to full health, Martin continued earning rotation minutes because of her dependable two-way play.

Head coach Lynne Roberts repeatedly emphasized that Martin fit naturally into Los Angeles’ offensive system.

Martin herself also embraced the opportunity from day one, saying she intended to fully buy into her role, continue learning and make the most of every chance she received. That attitude became one of the reasons teammates and coaches believed she deserved a standard contract.

The timing of the decision is also important.

With the WNBA’s midseason guarantee deadline approaching, teams across the league have been evaluating roster flexibility before contracts become fully guaranteed. Rather than risk losing Martin after exhausting her developmental eligibility, the Sparks chose to secure her future with the franchise.

Now, Martin enters the next phase of her professional career with something she worked tirelessly to earn a permanent place on an active WNBA roster.

For the Sparks, the signing rewards a player who consistently proved her value despite limited opportunities. For Martin, it’s another reminder that persistence, preparation and professionalism can eventually open the right door.

After surviving roster cuts, embracing a developmental role and steadily earning the trust of her coaches, Kate Martin has officially turned a temporary opportunity into a long-term commitment and her story with the Los Angeles Sparks is only beginning.
