The Miami Heat may not be finished reshaping their roster just yet.
After a summer filled with major moves and ambitious plans, Miami appears to have one more roster decision to make. With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo expected to form the foundation of the team moving forward, the Heat have assembled a group capable of competing at the highest level.
The addition of Klay Thompson has also given Miami another experienced scorer and one of the most accomplished shooters of his generation.
However, there is still room for another player.
Rather than using that final spot on an established veteran, the Heat could potentially take a chance on a talented former first-round selection who is looking for a fresh start.
Cam Whitmore has emerged as an interesting name for Miami.
The former Houston Rockets forward has endured a difficult stretch since entering the NBA, but his combination of athleticism, scoring ability and youth could make him an appealing gamble for a team with championship ambitions.
Whitmore was selected with the 20th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft after entering the league with considerable expectations. His career, however, has failed to develop as many originally predicted.
After spending time with Houston and Washington, Whitmore now finds himself searching for another opportunity.
That situation could make Miami particularly attractive.
Miami could offer Whitmore a fresh beginning
The Heat have a reputation for demanding discipline, preparation and defensive commitment from their players. For someone like Whitmore, that environment could provide the structure necessary to take the next step in his development.
His biggest challenge has never been a lack of natural ability.
Whitmore has the physical tools to become a dangerous scorer. He can attack the basket, finish through contact and create shots for himself when given space. His ability to stretch the floor also gives him another weapon that could become valuable in the right offensive system.
The problem has been turning those flashes of talent into consistent performances.
During his first three NBA seasons, Whitmore averaged 10.5 points while shooting 45 percent from the field and 35 percent from beyond the three-point line. Those numbers do not tell the entire story because his opportunities and playing time have varied considerably.
What Miami could provide is a clearly defined role.
The Heat would not need Whitmore to immediately become a franchise star. Instead, he could be asked to provide scoring when the second unit takes the floor, attack defensive mismatches and bring energy whenever he enters the game.
That could be exactly the type of responsibility he needs.
Giannis and Bam could take pressure off
Playing alongside Giannis and Bam would also create a very different situation for Whitmore.
Neither player requires another teammate to dominate the ball for an entire possession. Giannis can create enormous pressure at the rim, while Bam’s versatility allows him to operate from multiple areas of the floor.
That could create opportunities for a player such as Whitmore.
Instead of constantly being responsible for creating an offence, he could focus on attacking open lanes, cutting without the ball and taking advantage of opportunities created by Miami’s stars.
Thompson’s presence could also benefit him.
A championship-tested veteran who can punish defenses from the perimeter would force opponents to pay attention whenever he is on the floor. That could create additional space for Whitmore to operate.
For Miami, the potential reward is obvious.
If Whitmore can become more disciplined and efficient, the Heat could find themselves with an explosive young scorer who costs relatively little compared with established NBA talent.
The risk would be relatively small
There is no guarantee that a change of scenery would suddenly transform Whitmore into the player many expected him to become.
Miami would still have to determine whether he can consistently defend, make the right decisions and accept a role within a structured system.
But that is also what makes the potential move appealing.
The Heat would not be giving up their future to acquire him. They would simply be offering an opportunity to a former first-round pick whose career has reached an important crossroads.
Whitmore’s previous rookie contract was worth roughly $15 million, but his current circumstances are much different after being released. That could give Miami the chance to bring him in without making a significant financial commitment.
For Whitmore, meanwhile, the opportunity could be even more valuable.
Joining a contender alongside Giannis, Bam and Thompson would give him a chance to rebuild his reputation while competing for meaningful games.
Miami has already made major moves to establish its next era.
Now, the final roster spot could be used on a player who does not have a guaranteed future but possesses enough talent to make the gamble worthwhile.
Cam Whitmore may not be the obvious superstar addition, but perhaps that is exactly why the idea makes sense.
Sometimes the most valuable move is not signing the biggest name available.
It is finding the player who still has something to prove.
And for Whitmore, there may be no better time to prove it than now.
