Ollie Watkins’ Aston Villa future has suddenly become one of the biggest talking points around the club, with Al-Hilal continuing their push to sign the England striker and Villa facing a difficult decision over one of their most important players.

The situation has moved quickly in recent days. Al-Hilal have already seen offers rejected, but negotiations remain alive, while reports indicate Watkins is keen on the possibility of moving to Saudi Arabia. Sky Sports reports that the Saudi club have had a bid worth around £38.5 million rejected and remain in talks with Villa.

For supporters, the timing could hardly be more uncomfortable. Watkins was not included in Villa’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League opener against Brighton, with the transfer situation surrounding him increasingly difficult to ignore. His absence came as Villa suffered a nightmare start, falling 4-0 behind during the opening stages of the match.

That has only intensified the attention surrounding the striker.

Watkins has been one of the most reliable attacking players at Villa Park since arriving from Brentford in 2020. He has developed into a central figure under Unai Emery and has consistently carried a major share of the club’s goalscoring responsibility.

Losing him now would therefore be about much more than allowing one player to leave. Villa would have to replace goals, movement, experience and a forward who understands Emery’s demands. That is why the club have reportedly been examining alternatives in case the situation reaches a point where a departure becomes unavoidable.

Nicolas Jackson has emerged as one of the names being considered. Sky Sports reports that Villa are expected to make an approach for the Chelsea striker if Watkins is sold, with Jackson valued at around £65 million by his club. That possibility underlines just how significant Watkins’ potential exit could become.

Yet Villa have not simply accepted that Watkins is leaving.

Unai Emery has made it clear that he does not want to lose the striker, although he has acknowledged that the situation can change if the right conditions are met. Reuters reported that Emery said Watkins had received offers and could leave if the terms were favourable for both the player and the club.

That leaves Villa with a delicate balancing act.

The club must decide whether a major transfer fee is worth accepting for a player who remains under contract and is still capable of making a huge difference over the course of a season. At the same time, Watkins must decide whether his next chapter should be in England or Saudi Arabia.

Reports have also suggested that personal terms with Al-Hilal have been agreed, although the transfer still depends on Villa accepting an offer. Al-Hilal are expected to continue their pursuit after previous proposals were rejected, meaning the story is unlikely to disappear quietly.

For Watkins, the situation is particularly striking because his relationship with Villa has been built over several seasons. He has become one of the club’s leading modern goalscorers and has played a major role during their rise under Emery.

But football can change quickly, especially during the transfer window.

Villa have already experienced significant movement this summer, with several established players departing and more uncertainty surrounding other key names. Watkins’ possible exit would add another major storyline to an already turbulent period.

The Brighton defeat has made the issue even more sensitive. Villa need attacking solutions immediately, yet their most experienced striker was watching from the sidelines while the team struggled badly.

That does not prove Watkins’ departure is imminent, but it shows how closely his future is now connected to Villa’s plans.

For supporters, the biggest question is simple: will Ollie Watkins still be an Aston Villa player when the transfer window closes?

At this stage, there is no confirmed agreement between Villa and Al-Hilal. The club have rejected substantial offers, negotiations are continuing, and Emery still hopes the striker can remain.

But with Al-Hilal pushing and Watkins reportedly open to the move, Villa’s decision could soon become one of the defining moments of their summer.

What happens next may determine not only Watkins’ future, but also the direction of Aston Villa’s entire attack. And fans will be watching every development with growing concern.
