Wolverhampton Wanderers head into Sunday’s meeting with Sheffield United carrying plenty of attacking promise, but there is one name that will naturally attract more attention than most: Fer López.
The Spanish midfielder has quickly become one of the most exciting players in the Wolves squad, and supporters will be hoping he is ready to play a major role when César Peixoto’s side travels to Bramall Lane.
There is, however, an important distinction to make. At the time of writing, Wolves have not confirmed that López is injured or unavailable for the Sheffield United match. The 22-year-old was involved in the previous league fixture against Birmingham City and scored after only three minutes, helping Wolves eventually secure a 2-2 draw.
That makes the suggestion of a major doubt something that should be treated carefully rather than as a confirmed absence.
What cannot be questioned, though, is the importance López has quickly assumed within Peixoto’s team.
The midfielder has started all five of Wolves’ Championship matches this season and has established himself as one of the side’s principal creative outlets. His performances during August were strong enough for supporters to vote him Wolves’ Player of the Month, an award that underlines just how quickly he has captured the imagination of the Molineux faithful.
His numbers have also made a significant impression.
López entered the Sheffield United game with three Championship goals and two assists from his opening five league appearances. Two of those goals came during Wolves’ impressive victory away at Preston North End, while he also provided an assist against Blackburn Rovers and another against Stoke City.
His latest goal came against Birmingham, when he arrived inside the penalty area to finish Rodrigo Gomes’ dangerous cross and give Wolves an early advantage.
Those performances explain why his potential absence would be such a talking point among supporters.
Wolves are attempting to build momentum in the Championship and ultimately challenge for promotion back to the Premier League. Having a player capable of creating chances, finding dangerous positions and producing moments of individual quality could prove extremely valuable during a long and demanding campaign.
Peixoto has also made it clear that López is an important part of his plans.
Following the Birmingham draw, the Wolves head coach praised the midfielder’s contribution and highlighted the amount of work he had done without the ball. That is significant because López is not being relied upon simply for goals and assists. His manager expects him to contribute to the overall structure of the team as well.
That makes his availability particularly important.
Wolves will also need to respond to the disappointment of dropping points after twice taking the lead against Birmingham. The defensive issues from that match will need attention, but the attacking quality remains one of the biggest reasons for optimism.
Raúl Jiménez, Adam Armstrong, Rodrigo Gomes and López give Peixoto several attacking options, while Ladislav Krejčí has already demonstrated his threat from set pieces.
Still, López is developing into a player who can change the rhythm of a match.
His ability to receive possession between the lines, carry the ball forward and deliver the final pass gives Wolves another dimension. Sheffield United will therefore have to be prepared for his movement if he is selected.
For Wolves supporters, the biggest takeaway is simple: there is currently no official confirmation that Fer López is ruled out or even a major doubt for Sunday’s match.
Until the club provides different information, fans should expect to see the influential midfielder remain firmly in contention.
What is certain is that Wolves will need their best players firing if they are to come away from Bramall Lane with a result.
And if Fer López continues the form that earned him the August Player of the Month award, Sheffield United could have a serious problem to deal with.
