Team USA has been handed a late change ahead of the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, with two of its biggest stars, A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, withdrawing from the tournament for health reasons. Their departures have forced an adjustment to the roster, with Washington Mystics standouts Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen receiving the call to join the American squad.
Wilson’s absence changes the balance of a team expected to enter the competition with overwhelming experience and star power. The four-time WNBA MVP has been one of the dominant players in the world, while her international résumé includes major success at both the World Cup and Olympic level.
The decision comes after a demanding stretch for Wilson with the Las Vegas Aces. She has carried a workload during the WNBA season, and with the playoffs approaching, stepping away from international competition gives her an opportunity to recover and prepare for the important part of the campaign.
Plum’s situation is different but equally important. The Phoenix Mercury guard has been dealing with a lingering calf problem, and the injury has not completely healed. Her decision to withdraw from the World Cup also comes with a larger consequence, as she has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 WNBA season.
Plum played a key role for the United States during the 2024 Olympic gold-medal run, including a memorable contribution in the championship game against France. Losing a player with her shooting, experience and ability to handle pressure leaves another major responsibility for the remaining guards.
In their place, Citron and Iriafen bring youth, energy and an opportunity to make an impression on the biggest international stage. Both players have been important pieces for Washington, even when established stars are unavailable.
For Citron, the selection represents a particularly important milestone. The talented guard is set to make her senior World Cup debut after gaining international experience with USA Basketball. She also has a connection with Caitlin Clark, having played alongside the Indiana Fever star during the United States’ successful run at the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Women’s World Cup.
Iriafen is also entering the tournament with valuable national-team experience. She already represented the United States during the World Cup qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico earlier this year, giving her a taste of the international game before being elevated to the main roster.
The changes also add intrigue to a team featuring recognizable names. Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray, Jackie Young, Kahleah Copper, Rhyne Howard and Aliyah Boston remain part of a lineup.
Clark and Bueckers are among the players preparing for their first senior World Cup appearance, while several veterans bring championship experience that could help stabilize the group after the roster changes.
The United States will now have to adjust its rotations, responsibilities and chemistry before the tournament begins. Wilson’s interior presence and Plum’s perimeter scoring are difficult qualities to replace directly, but the Americans have enough talent to reshape their approach rather than simply recreate what they lost.
That could create new opportunities for Clark, Bueckers, Reese and the younger players. More responsibility could mean more touches, greater defensive assignments and a bigger role in crucial moments.
The timing makes the development especially significant. The World Cup is scheduled to begin in Berlin on September 4, leaving the coaching staff little time to settle into the revised lineup. The United States will open against China, an opponent with international experience.
Team USA remains one of the favorites despite the setbacks, but the withdrawal of Wilson and Plum ensures the road to another championship will look different than expected. What initially appeared to be a star-studded roster has become a test of depth, adaptability and trust.
For Citron and Iriafen, meanwhile, the opportunity could hardly be bigger. They were not originally expected to occupy these spots, yet they now have the chance to help Team USA defend its title while establishing themselves on the international stage. Their unexpected promotion could become one of the fascinating storylines of the tournament.
