Just when many thought Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball had finished reshaping its roster, head coach Jan Jensen made another major move and this one could quietly change everything. Former Oklahoma State Cowgirls guard Amari Whiting is officially joining Iowa’s women’s basketball program, bringing experience, toughness, and production that Hawkeye fans have been craving.
Whiting arrives in Iowa City after a strong 2025–26 season at Oklahoma State, where she started all 34 games and averaged 9.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game in 29.1 minutes. She also averaged 1.76 steals per game, proving she impacts both ends of the floor. For a guard standing 5-foot-10, those rebounding numbers immediately stand out.
And here’s what makes her story even more fascinating: this isn’t a typical transfer story. Whiting’s path to Iowa has been anything but ordinary stretching from international roots in Italy to stops at BYU Cougars women’s basketball and Oklahoma State before finally landing with the Hawkeyes.
That winding journey is exactly why many inside college basketball believe Iowa just landed one of the portal’s most underrated additions.
Whiting first made her name at BYU, where she became one of the most reliable young guards in the program. As a freshman, she averaged 10.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. Instead of experiencing the typical freshman learning curve, she looked polished from the start calm under pressure, smart with the ball, and unusually composed in late-game situations.
She followed that up with another productive season as a sophomore, averaging 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while continuing to develop as a two-way player. Her consistency was impossible to ignore. In an era where some players flash brilliance only occasionally, Whiting built her reputation on doing the little things every night.
Then came the move to Oklahoma State.
At first, the transition raised questions. New system. New teammates. Bigger expectations. But Whiting adapted quickly. She became one of the Cowgirls’ most dependable starters, offering versatility that doesn’t always show up fully in the box score.
She could initiate offense. She could defend multiple positions. She could crash the glass like a forward.
That versatility is a huge reason Iowa pursued her so aggressively.
Jensen didn’t hide her excitement after landing the veteran guard.
“Amari has a great basketball IQ, and she is not only a great defender, but she loves defense. Amari is going to be a fantastic fit for her final season at Iowa.”
That quote reveals something important.
Iowa wasn’t simply recruiting points they were recruiting identity.
Since the departure of several key players through graduation and the transfer portal, the Hawkeyes have been searching for players who bring maturity and winning habits. Whiting checks both boxes.
Her arrival also strengthens a backcourt that is already being rebuilt through the portal. She joins standout transfer Dani Carnegie, another major addition who gives Iowa more scoring punch. Together, Carnegie and Whiting provide a balance of offense, defense, and experience that could keep Iowa competitive in the loaded Big Ten.
What may excite fans most, however, is Whiting’s style of play.
She doesn’t force highlights.
She creates winning possessions.
A deflection here. A clutch rebound there. A smart pass that leads to an easy basket.
Championship-level teams need players like that.
Look at recent deep tournament runs across women’s college basketball elite teams almost always have at least one player whose value goes beyond scoring. That’s where Whiting could become indispensable.
And don’t overlook the emotional side of this move.
Iowa is entering a new chapter. The program is working to prove its success wasn’t tied to one era or one superstar. The Hawkeyes want to show they can keep contending, reload through recruiting and the portal, and remain one of the sport’s premier destinations.
Landing Whiting sends that message loudly.
She also brings leadership that younger players can lean on. Having played in multiple systems and high-pressure environments, she understands how quickly momentum can swing during a season. That veteran presence becomes especially valuable during conference play, where every possession matters.
The numbers alone suggest Iowa added a major contributor.
But the bigger story may be what stats don’t fully capture.
Experience. Poise. Defensive instincts. Toughness.
Those traits often decide March basketball.
For Hawkeye fans, the question isn’t whether Amari Whiting can help.
The real question might be far more intriguing:
How much better can Iowa become with her on the floor?
If Whiting delivers the same production and perhaps unlocks another level inside Iowa’s system the Hawkeyes may have pulled off one of the smartest transfer portal moves of the offseason.
And by the time March arrives, this unusual journey from Italy to BYU, Oklahoma State, and finally Iowa might be remembered for one reason above all:
It could be the move that brought championship hope roaring back to Iowa City.
