Xhaka Returns to Premier League: Sunderland Secure £17m Arsenal Legend

In a stunning transfer coup that has sent shockwaves across the Premier League, Sunderland AFC have officially signed Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen for a reported fee of £17 million. The former Arsenal captain returns to England on a three-year contract, marking one of the most ambitious moves of the summer and signaling Sunderland’s clear intent to not just survive, but compete in their first season back in the top flight.

The 32-year-old Swiss international joins the newly promoted Black Cats after two successful seasons in the Bundesliga, where he played a key role in Leverkusen’s historic domestic double and deep Europa League run. Xhaka, known for his leadership, passing range, and combative midfield presence, is expected to bring top-level experience and grit to a youthful Sunderland squad.

Speaking at the official unveiling at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland head coach Mike Dodds hailed the signing as a “statement of ambition.”

“Granit is a player with world-class experience,” Dodds said. “He has led both club and country and understands what it takes to compete at the highest level. His presence in our midfield will be invaluable as we face the challenge of the Premier League.”Xhaka’s arrival is not just symbolic — it also fills a crucial tactical need. Sunderland have been lauded for their high-pressing, possession-based style, and Xhaka’s ability to dictate tempo from deep and shield the back four makes him an ideal anchor. He is expected to slot into a central midfield role alongside young talents like Dan Neil and Pierre Ekwah, providing mentorship and balance.

The signing also represents a full-circle moment for Xhaka, who left Arsenal in 2023 after a mixed but ultimately respectable seven-year spell, earning over 200 Premier League appearances. His return has been met with excitement and intrigue across English football.

Sunderland fans, starved of top-flight football for nearly a decade, now have real reason to believe. With a marquee signing like Xhaka and other high-profile additions such as Chemsdine Talbi and Robin Roefs, the club appears to be laying down a serious marker.

As the Premier League season looms, the Black Cats are roaring louder than ever — and with Xhaka now at the heart of it, Sunderland may just be ready to make their mark once more.
