Safety Keon Sabb, Tight End Josh Cuevas Transferring to Alabama - Sports Illustrated Alabama Crimson Tide News, Analysis and More

The Crimson Tide secured transfers from two college football playoff programs to kick off the last full week of February.

The Alabama football program has been in a state of transition over the last two months with Nick Saban’s retirement and Kalen DeBoer’s transition. As with all coaching changes there is turnover at multiple levels in the program, one of the most noticeable levels is on the field in terms of personnel.

While the football program has lost its fair share to the transfer portal DeBoer and his staff have also done substantial work filling the roster with talent from the portal as well. Alabama had seen three talented Washington players leave Seattle and follow DeBoer in Parker Brailsford, Germie Bernard and Austin Mack already, but on Monday the Tide got two more players out of the portal, former Washington tight end Josh Cuevas and former Michigan safety Keon Sabb.

Cuevas makes the fourth former offensive Husky to leave Washington and join the Tide and he’ll rejoin his former position coach Nick Sheridan in Tuscaloosa. He’s formerly out of Cal Poly where he played for two seasons before joining Washington. Cuevas played in all 15 games for the Pac-12 champions, making four receptions for 164 yards and a touchdown.

Sabb comes to Tuscaloosa by way of Michigan and is in the transfer portal because Jim Harbaugh accepted an NFL head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers. The 6-foot-1 safety is the first defensive transfer that DeBoer has secured. He played his high school football in New Jersey before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida.

The 4-star recruit in the Class of 2022 signed with the Michigan Wolverines and has appeared in 18 games over the last two years. He made 28 tackles with two interceptions and a defensive touchdown during the national championship season with one tackle coming in the Rose Bowl victory over Alabama.

The Crimson Tide has brought in eight players by way of the transfer portal during this offseason cycle with five choosing Alabama after the transition to DeBoer. The spring transfer portal window opens in April, giving DeBoer and even greater opportunity to add talent to his roster.
